YUL-DOH

We started loyalty points “churning” 10 years ago. With strategic purchasing and introductory credit card bonuses, Sherree and I  have accrued over 1.5 million aeroplan points, 14,000 Airmiles and,  over $16,000 in cash equivalent hotel bookings  and car rentals. Over covid, I expanded to include the RBC Avion/ British Airways Avios program. This allowed me to snag a fancy seat on qatar airways from Montreal to Doha for only $300 in taxes.

It’s the first time i have had a seat with a door and first time facing backwards while flying…very odd sensation during take-off. The safety card spelled out the proper brace-for-impact position in this orientation.

Got a little giri bag with gender typed mauve socks+pink eye mask, smelly toiletries and, pj’s - which were, thankfully, grey and navy.

Enjoyed some lovely pink champagne to match the eye mask.

Apparently the seat has a vibration feature but mine isn’t working.

I think my little cabin takes up the same space as 6 economy seats, but yes Deb, I am keeping track of my footprint…a good chunk of my holiday *is* bike powered.

On the menu is a starter of lobster bisque followed by Chilean Bass. The fish is also known as Patagonia Toothfish but thats name is a hard sell in chichi cuisine.  Both were delish!

After a decent sleep on my lay-flat bed, had an equally yummy breakfast. Followed by some thank you truffles.

I got a mini-cpap that can run on a battery for this trip as we are camping -it’s also the perfect size for the plane…probably the best flying sleep I’ve ever had.

In Doha now after 11-1/2 hours in the air and looking at 7 1/2 hours on the ground before heading to Jo-berg. There were more direct routes to Victoria Falls, but not more comfortable ones.  Hanging out in a massive lounge overlooking an indoor “orchard.” There are showers, a spa, a gym, a sushi bar, another bar, another bar etc.

No shortage of snacks and drinks! …oh, and the coffee tables all have magnetic chargers embedded…

On The Road Again

Travelling to all 7 continents was never a goal of mine in itself, but here i am jetting off to Zimbabwe. This makes Africa my 7th continent as  i age well into my 7th decade. Covid cancelled my 60th birthday cycling trip around Namibia but after 4 years of indoor cycling i decided I was ready for a bigger challenge: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe to Cape Town, South Africa via Botswana and Namibia. I’ll have a few days to chill in Cape Town at the end ,then some whistle stops in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul, if it’s not too bomb-y, before heading home.

I cashed in a lot of covid-earned loyalty points to fly in style with Qatar Airways in their fancy-dancey business class Q-Suites. Since they only fly out of YUL i’m starting out at Billy Bishop airport on Porter - where everyone is business class!

Flights, all business class, for a grand total of $625.22. Cash value, $22,001.25. My carbon offset is higher than my ticket cost…
