Up at 4:30 this morning and on the road at 5:30. Good thing with the sizzling heat that quickly built up. Our route took us through the National park where the buffalo roam, with the other big 5 - this meant that we road closely together which was the second biggest challenge of the day as I like to ride alone .The landscape is dry and dusty. Roads were fairly smooth. No animal sightings in the park but saw lots of big poop and an elephant skull. Neither of which are pictured below.
At kilometre 59 I had to stop and sit on the ground with a wet cloth on my head. And thus ended my first day of riding. No way was i going attempt the final 13 kilometres. Charles our guide was very clear on taking a break when needed and that we are not in a race. And do, on we continued to the Botswana border where baboons were rifling through the garbage bins.
Headed to our camp where we got instruction on pitching our tent - from here on in it’s our job…resetting alarm for 4 a. m.
After a little break we were off to a spectacular river cruise - saw hippo, crocs, elephants, impala, sea eagles and a plethora of other birds. The highlight was this fellow:
