Sesriem to Gretta

Late this afternoon we pulled into a very luxurious camp replete with GRASS! Will be soft for sleeping tonight. Lovely thatch roofs on the shelters and nice tables and benches. There is even a fridge!

Last night Charles warned us that today’s ride was the worst on the trip and that we should feel free to bail at anytime so we could go to the nice camp early. He understated “worst.”

The last camp was very commercial - full of early risers heading out to the dunes. Apparently it’s the most popular tourist destination in Namibia. Therefore other campers were up early making noise - most other camps were pretty empty so far…so I’ve been up since 3:30a.

Today’s schedule 20 km transfer + 15 km + 15 km + 15 km + lunch & 20 km transfer + 21 km + 21 km. This is on the way to our start point:

I managed 5 km on leg 1, 2.6 km on leg 3 and 5 km on leg 5. Roads were sandy with gravel, washboarded AND there was a tremendous cross wind. It took me 30 minutes to go 5 km so hopped on the bus. Leg 2 same conditions. Did not attempt leg 3 and at lunch everyone decide to skip leg 4 in favour of getting to the nice camp early. Lasted 5 km on leg 5 but since it was 44C out I decided to pack it in for the day as did most others. Too bumpy, too sandy, too hot! However, the scenery made up for all!

Had an ice cream and an iced latte at the shop at the camp entry. The had a nice garden with grass and 2 dogs.

This sign rivals the “Pot Hole” sign (There was also a “Wind!” sign but I missed it.

Social weaver bird nest spotted at lunch:

No wildlife apart from birds yesterday but saw some more signs.

Bobotie for dinner tonight! Kind of a South African mousaka - yay!

  2. I think you would see a giraffe coming in that landscape without the assistance of signage. And that would be fun to see!
